6 Years of Film Festivals

November 13th, six years down the track, our Manaiakalani Film Festival expanded to two theatres over the 12 hours. 3000 children visited during the day and our extravaganza at night was packed with parents and supporters.  It was fabulous to have a Manaiakalani alumni, Peni Peleti, as our MC in the evening.

This year Sommerville Special School and Stonefields School attended and showcased movies.

Be sure to visit our webpage and check out some of the movies from the schools.

  1. I am a student the University of South Alabama, and I am enrolled in EDM 310. We are assigned a teacher to comment on, and I was assigned to you. The Manaiakalani Film Festival seems like a very fun event. The students seem to really enjoy this festival. I am amazed at the confidence these children have while speaking in front of all the other students and adults.
These students are very talented in the arts.
Keep up the good work with this film festival!

  3. Hello Dorothy,
Like the other students posted before me, I am also a student assigned to your blog. I admit I had to do some research to find out where you are located, and what your school system in New Zealand is about. It seems like you have some opportunities in technology, partnering with Google. I also read about the ReTool School initiative your community is undertaking. I viewed the video introduction to the film festival, viewed several of the student's films, and browsed some of your kids blogs to get a better understanding of your use of technology. It looks like you all are on a great journey and I look forward to reading more of your blog posts!

    1. Hi Lynn, I really appreciate the time you have taken to connect with our community and culture. Hopefully it will enrich your own toolkit as you enter the profession. Even if it is only to sound more knowledgeable about Lord of the Rings with a future class :) I hope it has come through in your research that we do find that the affordances of the digital age have added many opportunities to create fun learning experiences for our young people - as well as seeing test scores rise.

  4. Dorothy,
I am also a student at the University of South Alabama. After watching your video of your Manaikalani Film Festival I think the program you have is wonderful! The children in the video look so happy, and seem to love talking in front of their peers and audiences. This seems to be a great way to get the children involved in the opportunities you have presented to them. I wish you the best of luck with your Manaikalani Film Festival and hope you have even more success in expanding this. I will also keep up with your blog to see how your process is going!

  6. Hello there,
I'm also a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama studying to become a teacher someday. Congratulations on another successful film festival! It's such an awesome thing that so many kids got to come out and participate this year, and it looks like everyone had a great time. I'll be featuring your blog over on my EDM 310 Class Blog in a few weeks so I can share with my classmates some of the awesome things that are going on in your school! I look forward to checking out your blog again, and I hope next year's film festival is as much of a success as this one was. It was great to see the kids really enjoying themselves in the video you shared!

  7. Hi Briley, Savannah, Anastasia and Jordan. Thanks so much for taking the time to explore the Film Festival post. The impact on our young people when they see a movie they have made shown on the extreme screen is enormous. It gives them a sense of pride, self worth and success. And in this era it is not that difficult to do. Most of the films were made in iMovie, and a handful were even made on phones!

  8. Hello Mrs. Burt,
My name is T’Keyan Peoples and I am a student in EDM 510 from the University of South Alabama. Congratulations on your film festival for being a successful another year. I enjoy the idea of seeing young people becoming creative with technology. It is also wonderful to view the world through the eyes of a child. I also enjoyed how you had a talent portion that afternoon to show other students various talents. I would like to see youth’s film festivals started here in the United States. I believe that it would bring the communities together along with supporting our youth. I hope you have another successful film festival this year. Hopefully, you could share some of the student’s videos with our Professor Dr. Strange and he can give us a link.
